Chiller vs ice: when does a cold plunge chiller pay for itself?
Against supermarket bagged ice, a chiller pays for itself in roughly a year at three sessions a week. Against bulk ice from a wholesaler, the same chiller can take five years or more to break even at that frequency. The reason the answer swings so wildly is that UK mains water is already cold enough to plunge in for about four months of the year — you are only paying for ice from roughly April to October.
So the honest framing is this: at low frequency a chiller is bought for convenience, consistency and water hygiene, not for money. At five or more sessions a week it becomes a straightforward financial win however you buy your ice.
The seasonal problem
Mains water temperature in the UK follows the ground temperature with a lag. Typical figures:

Indicative. Regional variation is significant, and a long supply pipe under a sunny garden runs warmer than the figures above.
The working rule behind those numbers is that 1 kg of ice cools about 100 litres of water by 1°C, plus 15–20% for heat leaking into an uninsulated tub. Averaged across a year, a 300-litre tub held at 10°C needs about 12 kg of ice per session.

The home freezer column is where good intentions go to die. A standard domestic freezer will make perhaps 4–6 kg a day, which covers an occasional autumn session and nothing like a summer habit. It also fills your freezer.

One caveat that works in ice’s favour at high frequency: if you plunge daily and keep the same water, the tub is already cold when you arrive, so each session needs a top-up rather than a full chill. In practice that can cut the per-session ice at daily frequency by a third. It also pushes you hard against the water-hygiene limit, since untreated water realistically wants changing every one to three uses.
What the chiller side costs
Capital. There are two routes.
- Retrofit a chiller to a tub you already own. A 1/3 to 1 HP chiller with pump and filter is typically £900–£2,500, plus £400–£1,200 for a compliant outdoor electrical supply. Call it £1,300–£3,700, mid-point around £2,400.
- Buy a purpose-built chilled plunge. £2,500–£12,000 for the unit, plus £900–£3,000 for installation.

Running cost. Once the water is at temperature, the chiller is only replacing heat that leaks in. For a well-insulated tub with a fitted lid, expect £15–£40 a month, or £180–£480 a year at around 26p/kWh. Add £60–£150 a year for filters, sanitiser and test strips. Read that table honestly. If you plunge once or twice a week and have access to cheap bulk ice, a chiller will never pay for itself in cash. People still buy one, and reasonably so — but they are buying an always-ready tub with clean water, not a saving.
What the table also leaves out is time. Fetching ice, hauling it and waiting for the tub to settle is 20–40 minutes a session. At three sessions a week that is 50–100 hours a year. Whatever your hour is worth, it dwarfs the ice bill.

Sizing a chiller
Chillers are sold in horsepower, which tells you very little on its own. Useful anchors:

The arithmetic behind it: removing 1 kWh of heat cools 100 litres by about 8.5°C. A 400-litre tub going from a July fill at 18°C down to 5°C therefore needs about 6 kWh of cooling removed, before you allow for heat leaking back in.
Two sizing traps:
- Manufacturers quote capacity at a flattering water temperature. A chiller rated at 1.4 kW against 20°C water will deliver noticeably less against 5°C water. Ask for the figure at your target temperature.
- Ambient matters. A chiller in a 30°C August garden rejects heat far less efficiently than the same unit in April. Undersizing shows up as “it never quite reaches 5°C in summer”.
Oversizing costs more upfront but cycles less and holds temperature more comfortably. Many units are heater-chillers, which lets the same box give you a warm soak in winter — worth asking about if you are pairing the plunge with a sauna.
Insulation and lids do more than the chiller does
The highest-return spend in this whole analysis is not the chiller. It is stopping heat getting in.
- A fitted, insulated lid is typically £80–£200 and can halve summer running costs. It also keeps out leaves, insects, sunlight and rain — and rain both warms the water and dilutes any sanitiser.
- An insulated shell (typically 40–50 mm of sprayed or moulded PU foam) is the difference between a chiller that idles and one that runs continuously in August.
- Insulation underneath. A bare shell on a cold concrete pad loses less heat than it gains from a sun-warmed one. A rigid insulation board under the base is cheap.
- Shade. Positioning matters as much as materials. Direct afternoon sun on a dark shell is the single worst case.
An uninsulated tub with no lid, sitting in July sun, can consume three to five times the energy of a well-specified one. That turns a £30 month into a £120 month.
Noise
Chillers run a compressor and a fan, typically 45–60 dB(A) at one metre, cycling on and off. That is audible from the patio and it is enough to matter under a neighbour’s bedroom window at six in the morning. Site it away from boundaries, raise it off the ground, use an acoustic screen with an open back if needed, and check whether the tub holds temperature overnight with the compressor idle. Persistent noise from domestic plant can be pursued as a statutory nuisance by a local authority, which is a conversation nobody wants.
Ice, of course, makes no noise at all.
What a chiller can’t do
- Sanitise the water. A chiller is a heat pump, not a filter. You still need circulation, filtration and either ozone, UV or a low chemical residual — see maintenance and hygiene.
- Chill quickly from warm. A full pull-down is 6–14 hours. If someone drains and refills the tub on a Saturday morning, it is not usable that afternoon.
- Rescue a bad tub. An uninsulated shell in direct sun may simply never reach setpoint, regardless of how much you spent on the chiller.
- Go arbitrarily cold. Most domestic units bottom out around 3–4°C, and running at the extreme of the range is where efficiency and reliability both suffer.
- Work off an extension lead. It needs a permanent, RCD-protected outdoor circuit.
- Survive being boxed in. Restrict its airflow and you get higher bills and a shorter life.
The short version
Plunging once or twice a week, with a cheap ice source? Stay with ice. Plunging most days, or plunging through a British summer, or sharing the tub with a household? The chiller stops being a luxury somewhere around three sessions a week and is clearly the right call by five.

Enormously. UK mains water arrives at roughly 6–8°C in winter and 18–20°C in summer. A 300-litre tub filled in January needs no ice at all to sit at plunge temperature; the same tub filled in July needs around 27 kg to reach 10°C. Ice is effectively a summer-only expense in Britain.
What can a cold plunge chiller not do?
It cannot sanitise the water — you still need filtration and either ozone, UV or a chemical residual. It cannot chill a warm fill quickly, taking 6 to 14 hours for a full pull-down. And it cannot compensate for a poorly insulated tub in direct sun, which may simply never reach the setpoint.
