Cold plunge vs ice bath: what's the difference, and which should you get?

A cold plunge is a purpose-built tub with a chiller that holds the water at a set temperature continuously, plus filtration so the same water can stay in it for weeks. An ice bath is any container — a stock tank, a barrel, an inflatable tub, a bath — that you cool by hand with bagged ice before each session. Both give you cold water immersion. They differ almost entirely on running cost, effort and whether the thing is usable year-round.

If you plunge occasionally, an ice bath is the sensible starting point. If you intend to plunge most days, the ice becomes the expensive part and a chiller pays for itself.

Where the money actually goes

The purchase price is the misleading number. The honest comparison is over a year of use.

Ice bath. A tub is £80–£600. The recurring cost is ice. Supermarket ice runs roughly £2–£3 per 2 kg bag, so a session needing 15 kg costs £15–£20 in ice alone. Three sessions a week is on the order of £2,000–£3,000 a year — more than the chiller you were avoiding. Making ice in a domestic freezer is cheaper but slow, and a standard freezer will not keep up with daily use.

Cold plunge. The chiller is the cost: a 1/3 to 1 HP unit sized for a domestic tub. Once the water is down to temperature, the chiller only works to hold it there, and a well-insulated tub with a fitted lid loses very little. Typical UK running costs land around £15–£40 a month depending on insulation, ambient temperature and target temperature — higher in a hot spell, close to nothing in January when the outdoor air is doing the work for you. Water quality is the difference nobody mentions

This is the practical reason most people who plunge regularly end up with a chilled tub.

An ice bath is standing water at a temperature that slows bacterial growth but does not stop it, with no filtration and no sanitiser. It needs emptying and refilling every couple of uses, which in a UK winter means dragging 400 litres out of a tub in the dark.

A cold plunge has a filter, usually a circulation pump, and typically either ozone or UV treatment, sometimes with a small chlorine or bromine residual. Water stays usable for weeks rather than days. That is a meaningful change in how often you actually use the thing.

What it takes to install a chilled plunge

Nothing about a home cold plunge is structurally dramatic, but it is not zero-work either:

  • A level, load-bearing base. A filled 400-litre tub with a person in it is comfortably over 500 kg. A paving slab base, a concrete pad or a properly specified deck — not lawn, not a timber deck built for garden furniture.
  • An outdoor electrical supply. The chiller needs a permanent, RCD-protected outdoor socket or a fixed connection. In the UK this is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations and should be done by a registered electrician. Extension leads through a window are not an acceptable arrangement for a permanent installation.
  • Drainage. You will empty it a few times a year. Somewhere for a few hundred litres to go that isn’t a neighbour’s flowerbed.
  • Airflow around the chiller. Chillers reject heat. Boxing one into an unventilated enclosure makes it work harder, cost more and fail sooner.

Do you need planning permission?

For a domestic garden plunge tub, almost never. A free-standing tub is treated much like any other piece of garden equipment. It becomes a planning question when you start building around it — an enclosure or a sunken installation can engage permitted development limits, and listed buildings and conservation areas have their own constraints. Which one is right for you?

Choose an ice bath if you are trying cold water for the first time, plunge once or twice a week, want no electrical work, or need something you can move.

Choose a cold plunge if you plunge three or more times a week, want it usable in July without a car boot full of ice, care about water hygiene, or want a fixed feature in the garden rather than a tub that lives behind the shed.

A common and entirely sensible path is to start with a tub, find out whether the habit sticks through one British winter, and then buy the chilled installation with a clear idea of the temperature and size you actually want.

A note on the health claims

Cold water immersion is popular, widely studied, and frequently oversold. The research is strongest on short-term physiological effects — the cold shock response, changes in circulating noradrenaline, subjective mood and alertness after immersion — and much weaker on the long-term outcomes it gets marketed for. There is also reasonable evidence that cold immersion straight after resistance training can blunt some of the muscle adaptation you trained for, which matters if you are lifting.

Common questions

Is a cold plunge just an expensive ice bath?

Functionally they do the same thing — put you in cold water. The difference is how the cold is produced and held. An ice bath needs ice added by hand each session and warms up as you use it; a cold plunge uses a chiller to hold a set temperature continuously, and filters the water so it can be left filled.

How much ice does an ice bath need?

For a typical 400-litre tub starting at UK mains temperature, expect roughly 10–20 kg of ice to reach 10°C, and considerably more to get near 5°C. In summer, with mains water arriving at 18–20°C, the ice requirement rises sharply — which is the usual reason people move to a chiller.

Can I use a chest freezer as a cold plunge?

People do, but it is a modification of an appliance that was never designed to hold water or to be entered by a person, and it puts mains electricity next to a body of water. If you go this route, it must be on an RCD-protected circuit and properly sealed. A purpose-built plunge with a chiller and an insulated, sealed water circuit is the safer arrangement.

What temperature should the water be?

Most home users settle between 8°C and 12°C. Colder is not automatically better — the discomfort rises much faster than any additional benefit, and very cold water shortens the safe exposure time considerably.
