Cold plunge maintenance and hygiene: keeping the water safe
Cold water is not self-sterilising. A home cold plunge needs the same four things a spa needs — mechanical filtration, a sanitiser residual, regular testing, and periodic water changes — with one twist: at 8–12°C, chemistry behaves differently from a 38°C hot tub, and copying hot-tub habits will get you the wrong result. The practical baseline for a domestic plunge is weekly testing, a rinsed filter every week or two, and a full water change every 4–12 weeks.
Nothing here is difficult. It takes about five minutes a week. But it is not optional, and the assumption that cold equals clean is the most common and most consequential mistake in home cold water setups.
Why cold does not mean clean
Low temperature slows microbial reproduction. It does not sterilise, and several organisms relevant to recreational water tolerate cold perfectly well.
More to the point, the problem is not just what grows — it is what goes in. Each bather introduces sweat, skin cells, body oils, hair products, deodorant, moisturiser, sunscreen and laundry detergent residue. That organic load consumes sanitiser, feeds bacteria, causes the foaming and cloudiness people mistake for a chemistry problem, and clogs the filter. A tub used by two adults daily is receiving a meaningful load, no matter how cold it is.
The compensation is that cold water works in your favour on the chemistry side: chlorine decays much more slowly at 10°C than at 38°C, so a residual you establish tends to persist far longer than a hot tub owner would expect.
Filtration
Filtration removes the particulate load so the sanitiser can deal with the microbial one.
- Cartridge filters are the norm — pleated polyester media in a canister, in the same family as hot tub cartridges. Typical spa cartridges filter to roughly 20–50 microns; finer 10-micron cartridges exist and give noticeably clearer water at the cost of faster clogging and a bit more pump work.
- Bag or sock pre-filters sit ahead of the cartridge and catch hair, leaves and grit. Cheap, and they extend cartridge life considerably on an outdoor tub.
- Turnover matters more than micron rating. The whole volume should pass through the filter several times a day. Most controllers run the pump on a schedule; 8–12 hours a day is a reasonable starting point, more with heavy use.
Rinse the cartridge with a hose weekly, soak it in a proprietary filter cleaner monthly to strip out oils and scale that a hose will not shift, and replace it two to four times a year. Cartridge costs are in the running costs breakdown.
Sanitiser: ozone, UV, chlorine, bromine
These are not alternatives so much as different layers, and the distinction that matters is residual versus pass-through.

The reason a residual matters: UV and ozone only act on water inside the equipment. They do nothing at the instant a bather enters and sheds bacteria into the tub. A low chlorine residual is what covers that moment, which is why the usual recommendation for a regularly-used domestic plunge is filtration plus ozone or UV, with 1–3 ppm free chlorine as the backstop.
If you use stabilised chlorine (dichlor) on an outdoor tub, watch cyanuric acid build-up — above about 30–50 ppm the chlorine becomes progressively less effective, and the only fix is a water change.
Testing and target ranges
Test with strips or, better, a liquid drop kit. Weekly is the minimum; twice weekly with daily use.

Adjust alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitiser. Correcting pH before alkalinity is why people end up chasing readings for a week.
Water changes
With filtration, a residual and ozone or UV, 4–12 weeks is the normal interval. The spa industry rule of thumb gives you a defensible starting point:
Days between changes = (litres ÷ 3) ÷ average bathers per day
A 400-litre tub used by two people a day gives 66 days. One person every other day gives around 260 days, which in practice you would cap at about 12 weeks anyway, because dissolved solids accumulate whether or not anyone is in the tub.
Change early if the water is cloudy or foaming, if it will not hold a chlorine residual, or if it develops a smell. A tub that will not hold a residual has a demand problem that no amount of extra chlorine will fix — that is a water change, not a dose.
Habits, biofilm and the things people miss
- Rinse before you get in. The single most effective maintenance habit. It removes the oils, cosmetics and detergent residue that consume sanitiser and clog cartridges.
- Keep the lid on. It keeps out leaves, insects, pollen, rain and sunlight — UV from daylight degrades chlorine — and it also cuts running costs substantially.
- Flush the pipework. Biofilm forms inside pipe runs, pump housings and jet lines where no brush reaches. Cold slows it; it does not prevent it. Run a proprietary pipe flush through the system two or three times a year, immediately before a water change, then drain.
- Clean the shell. Wipe the waterline every water change with a non-foaming spa surface cleaner. Never use household bathroom cleaner or bleach on an acrylic or rotomoulded shell — surfactants foam for weeks and some products craze acrylic.
- Clean the chiller condenser. Fins clog with pollen, dust and leaves. A blocked condenser raises running cost, raises head pressure and shortens compressor life. Brush and rinse the fins twice a year, spring and autumn.
- Winterising. At a 10°C target the water will not freeze, but if you shut down over a hard frost, exposed pipework and the pump can. Either leave circulation running or drain down properly. Outdoor siting considerations are on indoor vs garden.

Common questions
Does cold water need sanitising, or does the cold keep it clean?
It needs sanitising. Cold slows bacterial growth but does not stop it, and several organisms of concern tolerate low temperatures perfectly well. Every bather adds sweat, skin cells, body oils and residues that feed microbial growth and form biofilm. A plunge with no sanitiser residual and no filtration is standing organic soup within days, regardless of temperature.
What should the free chlorine level be in a cold plunge?
Aim for 1–3 ppm free chlorine, with pH between 7.2 and 7.6 and total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm. pH matters as much as the chlorine number: above 7.8 a large share of the chlorine converts to the far less active hypochlorite ion, so a correct chlorine reading at the wrong pH is doing much less work than it appears to.
How often should I change cold plunge water?

Is ozone, UV or chlorine better for a cold plunge?
They do different jobs and most good systems combine them. UV and ozone treat water as it passes through the equipment and leave no residual, so they cannot protect the bather at the moment of contact. A small chlorine or bromine residual does that. The usual arrangement is filtration plus ozone or UV for bulk treatment, with a low chlorine residual as the safety net.
Do I really need to shower before plunging?
Yes, and it is the cheapest maintenance you will do. A rinse removes most of the sweat, body oils, deodorant, moisturiser and detergent residues that otherwise enter the water. Those are what consume sanitiser, cause foaming and cloudiness, and clog filter cartridges. Households that rinse first routinely go two to three times longer between water changes.
