Bespoke sauna: when a custom build beats a kit
A bespoke sauna is a build designed and made for one specific space rather than assembled from a catalogue kit. It is the right choice when the space is awkward, when glazing or appearance is the point, when the sauna must match an existing building, or when it is one element of a combined sauna, shower, changing and plunge suite. Expect 8 to 20 weeks from design sign-off and, realistically, £15,000 upwards in the UK.
It is not automatically better than a kit. If your space is a regular rectangle and a conventional bench layout suits you, a good kit is better engineered, better value and available sooner. The honest test is whether you are paying for something a kit genuinely cannot do.
When bespoke earns its money
Awkward spaces. Under a staircase, a loft with a sloping ceiling, a cellar with low head height and a structural pier in the middle, a boat house, a garage corner, or a garden footprint where the only viable shape is long and narrow. Kits come in fixed modules; a custom build works to the millimetre and takes the room right to the awkward edges.
Design-led glazing. A full-height glass front, a panoramic window framing a specific view, a corner glazed on two faces, or frameless glass between sauna and adjoining shower. Large toughened panels need structural framing, thermal detailing and careful handling — the most common reason people move from kit to bespoke, and where the money goes.
Matching an existing building. Cladding that continues the material of an extension or garden room, a roof pitch that echoes the main building, a specific stain or charred-timber finish. A kit will always look like a kit parked next to your building.
Unusual bench layouts. An L-shaped bench, a deep lie-down upper bench, a two-tier layout in an unusually tall room, a wheelchair-accessible arrangement, or seating built around a central heater rather than against a wall.
Combined wet suites. Sauna plus shower plus changing area plus cold plunge, working as one space with shared drainage, shared ventilation and a coherent finish. Assembled from separate kits, that becomes a collection of objects rather than a room.
Integration with a garden room. One outbuilding that is part sauna, part gym or office, with a shared roof, base and services. Almost always a bespoke job, because the sauna has to be a properly isolated, vapour-sealed box inside a larger conventionally built structure.
When a kit is the better buy
Worth saying plainly, because a bespoke build is easy to talk yourself into:
- The space is a regular rectangle and a standard 2 x 2 m or 2 x 2.4 m module fits it.
- You want four to six people on conventional two-tier benches, which every kit already does.
- The budget is under about £12,000 all in, where bespoke design and coordination costs eat a large proportion of the total.
- You want it soon — a kit can be on site in weeks rather than months.
- It is going in a rental or a house you plan to sell, where the return on a premium finish is poor.
- You are unsure whether the habit will stick. Buy the kit, find out, and build the bespoke one later with a clear idea of the size and temperature you actually want.

The process

Two things stretch that timeline more than anything else. Large toughened glass is made to order and cannot be adjusted afterwards — an error here costs weeks. And planning or building control, where required, sits entirely in front of manufacture. Beyond timber, the finishes that move a bespoke budget most are glass, stone and floors. A large panoramic front is often the single biggest line item after labour. Split-face basalt or slate behind a heater, or a full stone feature wall, adds material and structural weight and needs a substrate that copes with the heat. Porcelain or stone tiled floors with a laid fall to a gully are standard in wet suites and add both cost and programme, because tiling is a separate trade with its own drying times.
Heaters, including wood-fired
Electric remains the default: predictable, controllable, timer- or app-driven. Sizing follows cabin volume at roughly 1 kW per cubic metre for a well-insulated room, with a significant uplift for large glazed areas and outdoor exposure. Wood-fired suits a garden or rural bespoke build and changes the design in several ways:
- A twin-wall insulated flue with correct clearances to combustible materials, roof penetration and flashing, and adequate height above the roofline for a clean draw.
- A non-combustible hearth and heat shielding around the stove.
- A dedicated combustion air supply, separate from the sauna’s normal ventilation.
- Dry wood storage within reasonable carrying distance.
- Installation by a competent person — HETAS registration allows self-certification of the work under the Building Regulations.

What drives the budget
In descending order of impact on most bespoke jobs:
- Glazing area. Toughened, made to order, structurally framed, often craned or carried by a specialist crew.
- Design and coordination time. Someone has to draw it, specify it and make the trades agree with each other. On a modest job that is a meaningful percentage of the total.
- Structural work. Cutting into a floor, forming an opening, strengthening a loft for the loading, or building a base for a combined structure.
- Services. A dedicated electrical circuit is a given; a wet suite adds hot and cold supply, drainage with a laid fall, mechanical ventilation and often underfloor heating.
- Timber grade. Cedar or obeche throughout instead of spruce is a substantial materials uplift, though rarely the largest single item.
- Access and location. Materials carried by hand through a house, or a crane over a roof, adds labour days — and London and South East rates run above the UK average.

These are indicative 2026 UK figures including VAT and installation, and they exclude landscaping, external hard surfaces and any planning fees. Choosing who builds it
The build quality that matters is mostly hidden: the continuity of the foil vapour barrier, the ventilated cavity behind the cladding, the ventilation geometry, and the detailing where glass meets timber meets heat. Ask to see photographs of builds in progress, not just finished rooms — mid-build photographs tell you far more. And establish who is responsible for what: a bespoke job typically involves a designer, a joiner, an electrician and possibly a tiler, and the failure mode is a defect nobody owns. Aspen and alder are the usual choices for internal cladding and benches: low resin, low odour and they stay comparatively cool to the touch. Western red cedar is the premium option, aromatic and stable, at roughly double the cost. Thermally modified timber is the standard for external cladding because it is dimensionally stable outdoors in a UK climate.
