Barrel vs cabin sauna: which suits a UK garden better?
A barrel sauna has a lower purchase price, a smaller air volume for its footprint and a curved shell that sheds UK rain well — it heats fast and looks striking. A cube or cabin sauna gives more usable seating and headroom for the same floor area, is normally properly insulated, and is easier to detail for a wet climate. The choice comes down to whether you value cost and heat-up speed or usable space and winter performance.
For a garden used year-round in the UK, an insulated cabin is usually the more practical building. For a first sauna on a tight budget, or for a corner of the garden where the shape is part of the appeal, a barrel makes complete sense.

Heat-up and efficiency: the barrel’s real advantage
A barrel’s advantage is geometry. A cylinder encloses less air than a cube of the same floor area, and there is no cold pocket in the corners for convection to fight. Hot air circulates in a continuous loop around the curved shell, so the temperature is more even top to bottom and there is less volume to raise in the first place. That is a genuine efficiency gain, not marketing.
The problem is that most barrels then give the advantage straight back. The great majority of barrels sold in the UK are uninsulated solid staves — typically 42 mm, sometimes 68 mm, of thermowood, spruce or cedar, and nothing else. Timber is a reasonable insulator by the standards of a building material and a poor one by the standards of an insulated wall. An insulated barrel — staves, insulation, foil vapour barrier and an inner lining — removes the objection and is worth the £800–£2,000 premium if the sauna is meant to be a winter habit rather than a summer one. If a supplier cannot tell you the wall build-up, assume it is solid stave.
Usable space: the cabin’s real advantage
This is where barrels disappoint people, and it is entirely predictable from the shape.
In a 1.9 m diameter barrel, the widest point is at bench height on the centreline. Above that the wall curves in, so the person sitting at the end of the bench is leaning into a sloping wall and cannot sit upright against it. Below bench level the shell curves in again, which is why barrel foot wells are narrow. Full standing headroom exists only along the centre line — you stoop getting in and out at the ends.
A cube cabin with a 2.0 × 1.5 m internal footprint and a 2.05 m ceiling gives you vertical walls to sit against, a full-length upper bench, and headroom everywhere. For a lie-down bench — which needs about 2 m of clear length — a cabin is the sensible choice; a barrel can do it, but only on the centreline, which usually means one person lying down and nobody else.
The practical translation: a “4-person” barrel is a comfortable 2-person sauna with two more people perched. A 4-person cabin is closer to honest. Our sizes and occupancy page has the dimensions to check any supplier’s claim.
Weather, foundations and siting
Rain. The barrel wins on principle. A curved shell has no flat roof, no upstands and no membrane joints, so water runs off and keeps running. Many barrels are also supplied with a shingle or felt roof strip over the top third, which is a sensible addition for UK rainfall. A cabin’s performance depends entirely on the roof detail: an EPDM or shingle roof with proper overhangs and a drip edge is fine; a shallow-pitch roof with no overhang will stain the cladding and eventually fail.
Wind. The barrel’s low, rounded profile is genuinely better on an exposed plot. A 2.4 m cabin with flat faces catches more wind, which matters for both the fixing detail and the heat loss.
Foundations. A barrel sits in cradles, which concentrate the load on two or three narrow bearing lines rather than spreading it. Those cradles need to sit on paving slabs on a compacted base, or a concrete pad — not directly on soil or lawn, where they will settle unevenly and rack the shell. A cabin needs a continuous level base: a slab, a paved area, or a deck specified for the load. Either way the base must be level, because a barrel out of level will not close its door properly and a cabin out of level will not either.
Access. Barrels are usually delivered flat-packed and assembled in place, which suits a terrace with a 900 mm side passage. Larger cabins may arrive as panels or as a fully built unit needing crane or Hiab access — check this before ordering. Planning, aesthetics and neighbours
Both are outbuildings for planning purposes and both are normally permitted development in England, but height is where they differ. A barrel on cradles has a curved roof, not a dual-pitched one, so the permitted development limit is 3 m rather than 4 m — and 2.5 m if any part is within 2 m of a boundary. Aesthetically, a barrel announces itself. Some people want that; some neighbours don’t. A clad cube with a flat or mono-pitch roof reads as a garden room and disappears into a fence line more easily. If the garden already has a modern extension or a contemporary garden office, a cabin will usually sit better with it — and a bespoke build can match cladding and detailing exactly.
Maintenance and lifespan
Barrel. Re-tension the steel bands periodically, particularly in the first year as the timber settles and seasonally as it moves. Treat or oil the exterior staves on the manufacturer’s schedule. The staves are structure and weather surface at once, so a damaged stave is a bigger job than a damaged board. The end walls and door frame are the usual failure points.
Cabin. Maintain the roof covering, keep gutters or drip edges clear, and re-treat the cladding. A cabin’s advantage is that the layers are separate — you can replace a cladding board or a roof covering without touching the structure.
Both need the internal timber left untreated, benches cleaned, and ventilation kept clear. Both are 15–20 year buildings if looked after, and both fail early if they sit in standing water.
Which to buy
Choose a barrel if budget is the constraint, the plot is exposed, you want fast heat-up for one or two people, and you like the look. Insist on knowing the stave thickness, and pay the premium for an insulated version if you want to use it through a British winter.
Choose a cabin if you want four people to sit comfortably or one to lie down, you want insulation as standard, you want the building to blend into the garden, or you are planning a longer-term installation with a cold plunge or changing space alongside.

How long does a barrel sauna take to heat up?
A typical 2 m barrel with a correctly sized 6 kW heater reaches usable temperature in roughly 30–45 minutes in mild UK conditions, and 45–60 minutes in winter. An equivalent insulated cube cabin is broadly similar or slightly slower to reach temperature, but holds it with less heater duty cycle once there.
Do barrel saunas leak?
A well-made barrel does not, because the staves swell and the steel bands tension the shell. The bands do need periodic re-tightening as the timber moves through the seasons, and that is the main ongoing maintenance job. The vulnerable points are the flat end walls and the door frame rather than the curved shell itself.
Which lasts longer, a barrel or a cabin sauna?
Both should give 15–20 years or more with maintenance. A barrel sheds rain naturally and has no flat roof to fail, but the staves are the structure and the weather surface at once. A cabin separates the two, so a well-detailed cabin with a good roof covering and treated cladding is generally the more durable arrangement — and the easier one to repair.
