Wood-fired vs electric sauna heater: which suits a UK garden?
The physics is similar — both heat a bed of stones and the air around them, both deliver proper löyly — so the decision is really about infrastructure and temperament. An electric heater needs a dedicated circuit and gives you push-button, timer-scheduled heat. A wood-fired stove needs a flue, building-regs compliance and someone who enjoys tending a fire, and in exchange it works anywhere and turns heating the sauna into part of the session.
One UK-specific note up front: there is no gas option here. Nobody runs a gas line to the bottom of a garden for a sauna, so the garden choice is genuinely binary — cable or chimney.

The convenience gap, honestly
The biggest difference is not in the table’s numbers. An electric heater on an app or timer means the sauna is at 85°C when you walk down the garden, every time, with zero attention. A wood stove means lighting a fire 45 minutes before you want heat, feeding it during the session, and managing it down afterwards. Some people find that ritual is precisely the point — the session starts when the match strikes. Others discover, three months in, that it quietly halves how often they sauna. The heat itself differs less than folklore suggests, but it does differ: a wood stove runs a larger stone mass with more radiant heat and a gentle temperature drift that many experienced sauna users prefer, where an electric heater holds a flat thermostatic line.
Running costs at 26p/kWh
Using the same arithmetic as sauna running costs: a 6 kW electric heater in a decent indoor or well-insulated outdoor cabin uses about 5.6 kWh per session — roughly £1.40–£1.60 — and an 8 kW heater in an outdoor cabin with a longer winter warm-up runs to £2.80–£3.20.
A wood-fired session burns roughly 10–15 kg of kiln-dried hardwood. At UK bulk prices of about £0.35–£0.55 per kilo, that is £3–£7 per session — comparable to or above electric. The wood-fired cost case only wins with access to cheap or free seasoned wood, and “free” wood still needs a year of seasoning, a dry store and your labour. Burning damp scrap is not the saving it looks like: it produces tar in the flue, smoke complaints and a poor sauna.
The compliance side
Electric is the familiar story: 6–9 kW means a dedicated RCD-protected radial circuit, notifiable under Part P, installed and certified by a registered electrician — full detail on home sauna electrical requirements. The cost scales with the cable run, which is exactly why remote corners of large gardens push people toward wood.
Wood-fired swaps that for combustion rules:
- Part J of the Building Regulations governs the stove, hearth and flue. The practical route is a HETAS-registered installer, who self-certifies; the alternative is a building control application. Either way you end with a certificate — which your insurer and any future buyer will want to see.
- The flue must be insulated twin-wall with specified clearances to combustibles — and in a timber cabin, everything is combustible. Heat shields, correct penetrations and a proper roof flashing are not optional details; flue clearance faults are the classic wood-sauna fire cause.
- Smoke control areas cover most UK cities and many towns. Inside one, the stove must be a Defra-exempt appliance (or you must burn only authorised fuel). Check the specific model against Defra’s exemption list before ordering — many imported sauna stoves are not listed.
- Chimney sweeping annually, ash disposal, and a carbon monoxide alarm in the cabin.

Choose electric if the sauna is within a sane cable run of the house, you want heat on a schedule with no tending, you are in a smoke control area, or anyone in the household would treat fire-management as a chore. This is the right answer for most UK gardens.
Choose wood-fired if the sauna sits beyond an affordable cable run (a long trench can cost more than the stove), you have a real supply of seasoned wood, or the ritual is the point — you want the sauna to be an event, not an appliance.
