“Steam room” covers two projects with nothing in common but the vapour: a modular cabin you buy and plumb in, and a custom tiled room you build. One costs like a good shower enclosure; the other costs like a small wet-room extension. Almost every confusing quote traces back to mixing them up.

Route 1: the modular steam cabin — £1,500–£4,000

A factory-sealed enclosure — glass, acrylic or composite — with the steam generator, controls and lighting built in. You need a water feed, a drain and an electrical supply.

  • Fitting: plumber + electrician, typically £300–£800 all-in for a straightforward site
  • Strengths: sealed by design, no risk to the building fabric, working in a day

The generator is the smallest line. What you’re really paying for is containment — a permanently wet room that never lets moisture into the building. Running costs — cheaper than people fear

How much does a home steam room cost in the UK?

Two very different projects share the name. A modular steam shower cabin — a sealed factory unit with a built-in generator — typically runs £1,500–£4,000 plus straightforward fitting. A custom-built tiled steam room is a wet-room construction project: realistically £7,000–£20,000+ including the generator, tanking, tiling, a sloped ceiling and ventilation. Is a steam room cheaper to run than a sauna?

Broadly comparable per session, for opposite reasons.
