Chest freezer ice baths: why we wouldn't build one
The chest freezer ice bath is the internet’s favourite cold plunge hack, and it is popular for a reason worth stating honestly: a chest freezer is an insulated, sealed, self-chilling box for a few hundred pounds, and those are exactly the capabilities that purpose-built cold plunges charge thousands for. It is also an appliance with mains electricity and unswitched wiring directly beneath a tub of water you sit in, no structural rating for a human, and seams that were never meant to hold standing water.
We said it briefly on ice baths at home: people convert them, and we would not. This page is the longer version — what the conversion actually involves, what it genuinely gets right, and where the risk lives — so the decision is made on specifics rather than either forum enthusiasm or vague alarm.

Why the conversion is popular
Judged purely as a cold-water container, a chest freezer is embarrassingly good:
- Insulation. 50–70 mm of foam on every face plus a sealed lid — better than most purpose-built tubs under £2,000.

- Footprint. A large chest freezer fits a garage corner and holds enough water to submerge a seated adult to the shoulders.
The typical build: seal the interior seams with food-safe silicone (some builders add a liner), fill with water, run the freezer on a plug-in timer for a few hours a day until the water sits at target temperature, and plug the whole thing into an RCD. Where the risk actually lives
Electricity under the water. This is the disqualifying one. The compressor, starter relay and mains wiring sit in the base of the cabinet, directly beneath several hundred litres of water, separated by seams sealed for condensation — not immersion. Water finds its way past DIY silicone over months, wicks into the insulation, and arrives at the electrics from inside the cabinet where no RCD-protected socket can see it until there is a fault. The standard mitigations — an RCD adaptor, a timer so the compressor never runs while you plunge, and unplugging at the wall before every entry — are genuinely worth doing and genuinely reduce the risk. What they cannot do is turn an appliance with mains wiring under the water into one without.
Structure. The cabinet is rated to support frozen food spread across its floor, not a person’s weight concentrated through two feet and a seat, plus the leverage of climbing in over a side wall. Flexing walls open sealed seams — which is how the water reaches the electrics above.
The lid. A chest freezer lid is heavy, hinged and, on many models, latching — over a box a person is sitting inside, sometimes alone, in cold water that saps grip and coordination. Water quality and drainage. No filtration, no sanitiser loop, no drain valve. You are keeping standing water for weeks (the point of chilling it) in a box you cannot tip, so emptying means a siphon or a £30–£60 submersible pump, and the hygiene clock runs exactly as it does for any unfiltered tub — covered on maintenance and hygiene. Chilled water slows growth; it does not stop it.
Warranty and insurance. Using an appliance wildly outside its intended purpose voids its warranty, and gives a home insurer an easy question to ask after any water or electrical incident in the garage.

If the budget is the constraint

What should you do instead of converting a chest freezer?
If budget is the driver, a livestock trough or insulated inflatable tub at £80–£300 plus ice does the same job with no electricity in it at all — and UK mains water needs little or no ice from November to March.
